Therapeutic Transportation may be used to transport a client when they are subject to involuntary treatment or custody under Welfare and Institutions Code Sections 5150, 5585, or 5346 or voluntary treatment. Therapeutic Transportation Staff may transport clients and/or their family members when staff determines client requires transportation for emergent or non-emergent situations. Therapeutic Transportation will be used to take clients to a clinic, urgent care center, and/or any other social service agency. In an emergency situation, Therapeutic Transportation Staff shall determine appropriateness of the client based on evaluation and observation of client’s current behaviors; they shall transport if there is minimal risk determined with transporting the client to the determined destination (e.g. a crisis stabilization unit or emergency department). Therapeutic Transportation will not be provided when a client appears to be unstable. Alternatives will be used based upon consultation with supervisor. In the course of any transport, if a client’s behavior becomes uncontrollable: - Staff shall stop the vehicle in a safe area;
- If a client is on WIC 5150/5585, Therapeutic Transportation Staff shall immediately call 911;
- If safe, staff will allow the client to leave the vehicle; and,
- Therapeutic Transportation Staff must immediately contact their supervisor.
Therapeutic Transportation of the client must be direct from point of origin to destination, without any unrelated stops. Therapeutic Transportation of the client must be consistent with the provisions of DMH’s Illness and Injury Prevention Plan for field safety. Whenever a client is being transported, the driver must ensure that the requirements of California Vehicle Code are met. |
