I.  PURPOSE
 
To assure that Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) directly operated and contracted programs are approved as sites that provide assessment for Lanterman-Petris-Short (LPS) involuntary detention.

Contracted agencies shall develop an internal policy and associated procedures that are consistent with their organizational practices and meet the requirements set forth in this policy.

 
II.  DEFINITIONS
 
LPS Approved Program: A directly operated or contracted program that has applied for and been approved by the DMH Director or his/her designee for initiation of involuntary detention by LPS authorized staff.

LPS Authorized Clinician: Clinicians who have applied for and are authorized by the DMH Director/designee to evaluate individuals for involuntary detention pursuant to WIC Section 5150 in the course of their employment in a specifically approved program.

Local Mental Health Director: DMH Director

 
III.  POLICY
 
All DMH directly operated and contracted programs approved as sites to employ staff authorized to initiate an application for involuntary detention must comply with the requirements and procedures.
