  Policy 352.21 Medication Room and Examination Room Specifications
 
  REFERENCE
  1. One (1) Medication Room per clinic
    1. Power Supply and Network Connection
      1. Outlets to adequately support all equipment that require power; emergency power outlet for refrigerators and automated medication dispensing machine
      2. Internet data ports to support all equipment that require internet connection, including refrigerator
    2. Room Temperature Control
      1. Room is vented with functional air-conditioning and heater to regulate temperature of medication room 24/7/365
      2. Temperature shall be kept between 15 °C (59 °F) and 30 °C (86 °F) 24/7/365
    3. Equipment
      1. Medication storage unit
        1. Automated Medication Dispensing Machine
          • One (1) main cabinet per program
          • One (1) to three (3) tower cabinets per program as determined by DMH Pharmacy Services
        2. Lockable metal or wood cabinets
          • At least one (1) floor cabinet or several wall cabinets
        3. Separate locked non-removable drawer or cabinet for controlled substances as determined by DMH Pharmacy Services
      2. One (1) Refrigerator per program, dedicated exclusively for medication storage
        1. Temperature shall be kept between 2 °C (36 °F) and 8 °C (46 °F)
        2. Separate locked non-removable drawer or box for controlled substances as determined by DMH Pharmacy Services
      3. One (1) digital thermometer in refrigerator connected with network
      4. One (1) table at least 24 inches in length and width
      5. One (1) desktop computer with monitor. Laptop docking station may be provided in lieu of desktop computer if medication room staff have been issued laptops
    4. Security
      1. Card key badge access controlled by pharmacy services
      2. Wall mount physical key(s) electronic lock box installed behind locked door; password managed by pharmacy services
      3. Door with physical key lock
        1. To be used for emergency situations when electronic card key system fails or is non-operational
        2. Lock is unable to locked from the inside of the med room
        3. Two (2) physical keys locked inside electronic lock box

      5. Panic button mounted on the wall inside medication room

      1. Non-carpeted flooring for easy and thorough sanitation

      1. Adequate lighting in areas where medication-related tasks are performed

      3. 110V/20 Amp dedicated circuit with a NEMA 5-20R receptable for TMS device and chair
    2. Sink
      1. With running hot and cold water
      2. Water flow control mechanism (e.g. standard faucet, foot-operated pedals, wing-type handle, automatic shut-off systems)
    3. Sanitary supplies
      1. Wall-mounted liquid or foam hand-washing soap dispenser
      2. Antiseptic hand cleanser
      3. Wall-mounted, single-use paper towel dispenser or hot air hand-drying machine
    4. Flat table surface for medication preparation
      1. Surface must be away from sink
      2. Surface should be cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis
    5. Flat table surface for centrifuge placement
    6. Waste
      1. Regular trash bin
      2. Wall-mounted bracket for two (2) gallon sharps container
      3. Wall-mounted bracket for pharmaceutical waste container
    7. One (1) Refrigerator for urine specimens, if necessary
    8. Mobile lockable storage cart not to exceed 45" X 40" X 30" dimensions
      1. One (1) cart for storage of syringes, needles, cotton balls, bandages, and other supplies for medication administration
      2. One (1) cart for storage of vacutainers, vacutainer tubes and other phlebotomy supplies

      1. Non-carpeted flooring for easy and thorough sanitation
    10. Safeguards to protect client’s privacy during medication administration
    11. Biohazard container with leak proof red bags for blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM)
    12. Phlebotomy chair
    13. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) procedure chair (if necessary)
    14. Seating for client
    15. Medical grade recliner for medication administration and monitoring

      • Low exam table accessible for all adult populations including elderly, disabled, obese or clients who are pregnant
    16. Equipment for vital signs acquisition
      1. Automated vital signs devices for blood pressure, pulse, oxygen saturation
      2. One (1) digital thermometer to record body temperature
      3. Digital bariatric standing floor scale with handrails
      4. Stadiometer (for measuring height)
    17. Staff Workstation
      • Mobile workstation with a writing surface to allow nurses to access electronic health record, check medication orders and perform documentation (Preferred)
      • OR
      • Table or desk and a chair for nurse with desktop or laptop docking station
    18. Two regular chairs for client and clients’ caregiver, if applicable
    19. Antiseptics

  3. Vital Sign Station (optional)
    1. If space permits, a vital sign station can be created outside examination/treatment room for nurses to take and document vital signs
    2. Adequate space shall be allocated for vital signs equipment listed above
