Responding to Board of Supervisor Office Requests

  1. PARAMETER GOAL
    1. To provide direction for responding efficiently and effectively to Board of Supervisor Office requests.
       
  2. TERMINOLOGY
    1. Board of Supervisors (BOS): The five-member governing body of the County of Los Angeles.
    2. Board Liaison: The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH/Department) representative to the BOS.
       
  3. MEASURES
    1. All BOS Office requests should be reported immediately to the Board liaison.
    2. The Board liaison receives the request from the BOS Office and refers appropriately. 
    3. Requests from a BOS Office should be given high priority.
    4. The client should be contacted as soon as possible.
    5. Every effort should be made to fully understand the request.
    6. Every effort should be made to assist the client appropriately.
       
  4. TREATMENT STRATEGY
    1. Associated sources of Department information related to the request should be contacted.
      1. Information should be reviewed for related actions taken or not taken.
    2. Department executive staff should be consulted and/or notified about the request as needed.
       
  5. PROVISION OF SERVICES
    1. The request should be acted upon in all circumstances in which it is possible to do so, consistent with existing DMH policies and parameters.
      1. If it appears to conflict with DMH policies or parameters:
        1. The handling employee will seek management direction to complete the action, and
        2. The BOS Office should be notified as appropriate within what is permitted by HIPAA.
           
  6. OUTCOMES AND MONITORING
    1. The Board liaison will confirm receipt of the referral with the BOS Office.
      1. In some cases, the BOS Office may request a final disposition.
    2. Results of communication with the client should be transmitted to Executive Staff as appropriate.
       
  7. STAFF TRAINING
    1. Deputy Directors and supervisors should educate their staff about the role and contact information of the Board Liaison.
       
  8. SUPERVISION AND CONSULTATION
    1. DMH supervisor and Board liaison direction should be sought for all BOS requests.
