I. PURPOSE |
To establish the policy and procedures for distribution of intranasal naloxone by Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) to clients per client request to be used in emergency situations when suspected opioid overdose may be present. |
II. DEFINITIONS |
Opioid: Substances include opiate and related synthetic and semi-synthetic compounds that act on opioid receptors to produce morphine-like effects. Naloxone: Life-saving medication that can temporarily reverse opioid overdose, allowing the individual to breathe and providing enough time for emergency personnel to arrive. Authorized Personnel: Any DMH staff member that has received training for the distribution of intranasal naloxone. |
III. POLICY |
No DMH staff shall distribute naloxone to clients prior to completion of training. Intranasal naloxone for client distribution shall only be obtained through DMH Pharmacy Services in accordance with DMH Policy 352.17 Pharmacy Warehouse. Intranasal naloxone shall be stored in a designated cabinet supplied by DMH pharmacy located behind clinic front desk staff. Inventory shall be performed upon initial acquisition and weekly thereafter and logged by authorized personnel after each acquisition. After each distribution of intranasal naloxone, authorized staff shall document the following in the Naloxone (NARCAN) Distribution Program Log: - Lot # and Expiration Date of intranasal naloxone box(es)
- Number of intranasal naloxone boxes distributed to the client
- Number of intranasal naloxone used from previous distribution, if applicable
- Number of lives saved from previous distribution, if applicable
