II. DEFINITION Authorized Personnel: Psychiatrist, PA, NP, RN, LVN, psychiatric technician, pharmacist. III. POLICY |
Procurement of medications from any other supplier without approval from the DMH Chief of Pharmacy is prohibited. Medications shall be administered only under the direct supervision of the psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, nurse, or psychiatric technician. Only under special circumstances, as determined by the DMH Chief of Pharmacy, shall pharmacists administer medications to clients. The client, family, or responsible party shall be informed of the intended benefit and potential clinically significant side effects. Staff administering medication shall remain with the client and report observations to the ordering prescriber or Supervising Psychiatrist on duty. An expired medication order shall be renewed prior to medication administration. To prevent unintended disruption of treatment, an expired medication consent shall not prevent the client from receiving medication under an active medication order.
