I. PURPOSE |
This policy establishes the scope of practice for clinical pharmacists at directly operated clinics and programs to fully utilize their skill sets in continuing care and optimizing medication management for clients referred from psychiatrists and other health care providers. |

III. POLICY |
A pharmacist licensed by the California State Board of Pharmacy who possesses ANY ONE of the following qualifications may practice under the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) Clinical Pharmacist Collaborative Practice Agreement: - Completion of a Post Graduate Year Two (PGY2) pharmacy residency accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP).
- Completion of a Post Graduate Year One (PGY1) pharmacy residency accredited by the ASHP.
- Certified by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS).
- Licensed by the California State Board of Pharmacy as an Advanced Practice Pharmacist.
- At least one (1) year of experience as a pharmacist providing direct client care services.
Clinical pharmacists shall submit their California State Board of Pharmacy License and National Provider Identifier (NPI) number to the DMH Credentialing Office prior to providing medication support services for clients. Clinical pharmacists who provide medication support services as part of their job duties shall register with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to obtain a DEA license number after onboarding with DMH. Pharmacy residents are covered under the DMH Clinical Pharmacist Collaborative Practice Agreement. - Pharmacy students may provide services under the supervision of any licensed pharmacist who practices at DMH, but may not perform any duties independently.
