Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN): An RN with a master's or doctoral level nursing education who is formally recognized by the California board of Registered Nursing (CA BRN) with an identified clinical specialty. Furnishing: Ordering of medication or devices by PMHNP; the act of making a pharmaceutical agent or agents available to the client in accordance with a standardized procedure (BPC § 2836). Furnishing Supervision: A periodic review of the PMHNP furnishing practice conducted by a DMH physician that supports professional collaboration. Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP): An Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) licensed to diagnose and treat mental health conditions in accordance with state regulations. PMHNPs are classified into three categories: Standard PMHNP, 103 PMHNP, and 104 PMHNP, each with varying levels of autonomy. PMHNP Scope of Practice: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) specialized in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing who possesses additional preparation and skills beyond the Registered Nurse (RN) scope of practice which includes physical diagnosis, assessment and management of health-illness needs, the provision of psychotherapy and consultation services, and prescriptive or furnishing authority. PMHNPs utilize education, training, experience, and established standardized procedures to provide care beyond the RN's usual scope to perform the overlapping medical furnishing functions. Standard PMHNP: A PMHNP who assumes principal responsibility for the mental health care of clients under DMH written standardized procedures and the supervision of a DMH Psychiatrist. The scope of practice of Standard PMHNP includes physical diagnosis, health management, psychotherapy, consultation services, and prescriptive authority. The Standard PMHNP utilizes education, training, experience, and standardized procedures to provide care beyond the RN scope. This PMHNP category requires furnishing supervision. Standardized Procedures: Policies and protocols developed through collaboration among administrators and health professionals, including physicians, nurses, and pharmacists within DMH. Furnishing Protocols: Protocols developed by the PMHNP in collaboration with the furnishing supervisor, or DMH Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, to permit the PMHNP to furnish medications or devices. |
