I.  PURPOSE
 

To establish a policy for Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health (DMH) Directly Operated clinical staff on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to support clinical service delivery and clinical documentation. 
 

II.  DEFINITIONS
 

Artificial Intelligence (AI): An umbrella term used to identify the different computer systems and/or software used to perform tasks, such as generating clinical documentation, that are commonly associated with humans.
   

Clinical Documentation: Documentation of direct services, and activities supporting direct services, including progress notes and any other supporting documentation (e.g., assessment), and documentation of indirect services (e.g., Community Outreach Services).
 

III.  POLICY
 

DMH Directly Operated clinical staff shall not use any form of artificial intelligence (AI) for the purpose of clinical service delivery or clinical documentation.  
 

DMH is in the process of identifying AI applications and developing policies and procedures for the use of AI in clinical documentation, taking into consideration: 

  • Confidentiality and Privacy

  • Client informed consent; 

  • Standards of practice; 

  • Information security; and,

  • Technology security.
