Employees are eligible to join a group health insurance program during the first 31 days of employment with UAB. Those not joining during the first 31 days will be allowed to join only during an annual open enrollment period which will be announced by UAB or within 31 days of a qualifying life event.  Qualifying life events include, but are not limited to, marriage, birth of a child, adoption, or involuntary loss of coverage. This is not an all-inclusive list, and you may contact the Benefits Office for more examples of qualifying events.

Employees may select a level of coverage to cover the employee, spouse, and/or dependent children up to age 26. Refer to UAB's group health insurance plan booklets for more details.

To lower the premium cost to employees, UAB pays a major portion of the premium.

UAB also offers a premium-assistance program for eligible employees.  To qualify for the subsidy, employees must have a household income, based on family size, of 2.5 times the federal poverty level or less.  Employees are required to re-apply each year for the program.

Information concerning the different options for group health insurance programs is available from the Benefit Office.
