Abstract: 
This policy describes the compensation that is required for employees completing tasks required to perform their work activities prior to the start of the work day. This would include those employees required to change clothing before or ending the work day.

The Fair Labor Standards Act requires employers (UAB) to compensate employees that are completing tasks required to perform their work activities. This would include those employees required to change clothing before starting work. The employee's work time should include the time that it takes to change at the beginning and/or end of the workday. In order to comply with this law, departments may utilize one of the following methods to compensate employees for dress time:


Method 1:
Employees may be paid up to 15 minutes for dress time. The 15 minutes should be computed into the total amount of time that the employee worked. The 15 minutes dress time and the time worked should total the normal shift length of 8 hours, 12 hours, etc.

Method 2
Dress time of up to 15 minutes may be paid by having employees clock in before they change clothes at the start of the shift and clock out after they change clothes at the end of the shift.
