The Handbook of Operating Procedures contains a description of the categories and general membership requirements of the standing committees of the General Faculty (see HOP 2-1040 ). The details of composition and membership of the standing committees categorized as student services and activities committees are given below.

 

  1. FINANCIAL AID TO STUDENTS, COMMITTEE ON (B1)

 

Composition. Five (5) voting members of the General Faculty for three (3) year staggered terms, representing five (5) colleges or schools; five (5) students, including at least two (2) who are receiving, or have received, financial aid from the Office of Financial Aid; and two (2) staff members for two (2) year staggered terms. Four (4) of the students shall be appointed by the president from a panel of eight (8) nominees submitted by Student Government; the fifth student shall be appointed by the president from a panel of two (2) nominees submitted by the chair of the Graduate Student Assembly. In addition, every year the chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two (2) voting faculty members of the Faculty Council for one (1) year terms. Each fall, the committee shall elect a chair elect who shall be a voting faculty member of the committee, though, if that proves impossible, it shall elect a vice chair as an interim measure, while continuing to seek a chair elect. Each committee shall make an annual report on its work, in writing, to the General Faculty and Faculty Council. The executive director of the Office of Financial Aid, a representative of the Office of the Dean of Students, and a representative from the Graduate School shall serve as administrative advisors without vote. The president may appoint additional non-voting administrative advisors from the general administration areas of the University.

 

Function. To initiate and review policies and procedures; to hear appeals from decisions of the Office of Financial Aid.

 

  1. RECREATIONAL SPORTS COMMITTEE (B2)

 

Composition. Comprised of fifteen (15) voting members. Thirteen (13) members appointed by the president, including six (6) members of the General Faculty chosen for three (3)year staggered terms through the regular procedures of the Committee on Committees; two (2) members of the University staff for two (2) year staggered terms; one (1) University staff member designated by Recreational Sports for a one (1) year term; two (2) students designated by the Councils of Recreational Sports and two (2) other students designated by Student Government, all of whom are representative of the diverse student body. In addition, every year the chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two (2) faculty members of the Faculty Council for one (1) year terms. Each fall, the committee shall elect a chair elect who shall be a voting faculty member of the committee, though, if that proves impossible, it shall elect a vice chair as an interim measure, while continuing to seek a chair elect. Each committee shall make an annual report on its work, in writing, to the General Faculty and Faculty Council. The director of Recreational Sports shall serve as an administrative advisor without vote.

 

Function. To determine policy for conducting the Intramural Sports and Sport Club programs; to hear appeals of decisions of the Councils of Recreational Sports; and to advise on other matters pertaining to Recreational Sports and its programs, facilities, and services.

 

  1. STUDENT LIFE COMMITTEE (B3)

Composition. Three (3) members elected at large from and by the voting members of the General Faculty for three (3) year staggered terms. Three (3) student members shall be appointed by the president, one (1) each from panels of two (2) names submitted by the Graduate Student Assembly, Student Government, and Senate of College Councils. In addition, every year the chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two (2) voting faculty members of the Faculty Council for one (1) year terms. The Vice President for Student Affairs shall appoint two (2) non-voting administrative advisors at the start of the academic year. Each fall, the committee shall elect a chair elect who shall be a voting faculty member of the committee, though, if that proves impossible, it shall elect a vice chair as an interim measure, while continuing to seek a chair elect. Each committee shall make an annual report on its work, in writing, to the General Faculty and Faculty Council.

 

Function. The purpose of the Student Life Committee is to identify issues, act as a sounding board for student proposals, and facilitate communication with the Faculty Council.

 
  1. STUDENT ATHLETES AND ACTIVITIES COMMITTEE (B4)

 

Composition. Three (3) members elected at large from and by the voting members of the General Faculty for three (3) year staggered terms. Two (2) faculty members shall be appointed for one (1) year terms by the president from among the faculty currently serving on the Intercollegiate Athletics Council. Two (2) student athlete members, one (1) each from men's and women's athletics, will be appointed by the president from a list submitted by the Student Athletes Advisory Council. In addition, every year the chair of the Faculty Council shall appoint two (2) voting faculty members of the Faculty Council for one (1) year terms. The faculty athletics representative (FAR) shall serve on the committee in an advisory capacity. Each fall, the committee shall elect a chair elect who shall be a voting faculty member of the committee, though, if that proves impossible, it shall elect a vice chair as an interim measure, while continuing to seek a chair elect. Each committee shall make an annual report on its work, in writing, to the General Faculty and Faculty Council. The faculty-appointed representative to the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics (COIA) will serve as an ex-officio member.

 

Function. The purpose of Student Athletes and Activities Committee is to maintain a formal communication channel between the faculty and student athletes and to advise the president on matters pertaining to student athletes.
