Evaluation of Deans of colleges and Schools

The University of Texas at Austin (University) endorses the principle of reasonable consultation in the periodic evaluation of deans of colleges and schools as outlined in The University of Texas System (UT System) Board of Regents’ Rule 31101.

  1. Annual Evaluation

In accordance with Regents’ Rule 30501 and the Handbook of Operating Procedures 5-2310, it is the responsibility of the executive vice president and provost to conduct an annual evaluation of deans of colleges and schools. Such evaluations are developmental in nature and contribute to decanal merit salary recommendations.

  1. Timing

At a time not later than the conclusion of a six-year appointment as dean, an evaluation committee shall be constituted in the same manner as a consultative committee for deans of established schools and colleges (see HOP 2-2110).


  1. Ineligibility for Service

This provision is intended to further the efficient and productive work of committees while protecting the integrity of the process for performing periodic evaluation.

At the time committee participants are selected and throughout the service on the committee:


  1. employees on continuous or intermittent sick or personal leave, whether paid or unpaid;
  2. employees subject to temporary or permanent adjustments to work responsibilities because of a disciplinary outcome or interim measure; and
  3. employees determined by a three-person delegation appointed by the Executive Vice President and Provost, in consultation with legal affairs, to have an actual or perceived conflict of interest such that their participation creates the opportunity for their personal gain or advantage or whose participation will undermine the efficacy of the process

are not eligible for consideration as part of the pool from which committee members are selected for service on the committee.


  1. Charge to Committee

The evaluation committee shall be charged by the Executive Vice President and Provost (or designee) regarding the scope of its work. The evaluation committee shall deliver a report to the executive vice president and provost evaluating the performance of the dean with respect to the administration of the college or school and shall recommend whether or not the dean should be reappointed to the position. Deans typically serve no more than two, six-year appointments as the senior academic administrative officer of a college or school unless the executive vice president and provost determines that an exception is warranted.


The report of the evaluation committee is advisory and shall be in addition to any other evaluation procedures that may be employed by the University. Evaluation committees shall maintain the highest standards of confidentiality in all aspects of their work.
